Aiken, South Carolina Neighborhood Revitalization Neighborhood Single family residents Community Development Improvement |
History: The Aiken Housing Authority had condemned 60 apartments in Aiken due to a number of safety concerns. Nehemiah partnered previously with Community Development Improvement Corporation (CDIC) to build 20 homes for sale on some of the property made available after demolition of the condemned units.
Challenge:Replace old, unsafe public housing with varied single family homes.
Solution: This new effort is focused on keeping the new 23 homes as rental units for 15 years, after which the homes will be sold to the lower income residents occupying the homes using no interest deferred second mortgages to make the homes affordable. CDIC and Nehemiah will work with each family to prepare them for eventual homeownership and to instill in each family a sense of “ownership” of their new home. The Busch Crossing development is transforming Aiken by replacing old, unsafe public housing units with beautiful, varied single family homes that will strengthen and enrich the surrounding neighborhood for years to come.
